Not a miracle cure, but it DOES work! UPDATE., June 3, 2016

Phew! My circa 1960 porcelain bathtub had a REALLY big, nasty buildup of calcium tinged with rust from a very slow dripping faucet. (I gotta dig in and replace the washers.) I tried Barkeeper’s Friend, Clorox with Bleach, all kinds of grocery store stuff, even a razor blade and pumice stone and barely touched this stuff.

Finally I bought a 128 ounce jug of CLR at the hardware store to gave it a stab. It’s no miracle product, but it DOES work. I repeatedly used a spritzer to lay down a good coating of straight CLR on the nasty area, then returned in 15 minutes to scrub with a stiff brush. Each application cut down another layer of calcium and after six applications I finally declared it good enough although it needs more.

Be VERY careful to wear rubber gloves and work in a well-ventilated area. I foolishly started out bare handed and today my right forearm feels like I worked it over with sandpaper. Obviously, inhaling CLR fumes is a REAL bad idea. Wear a mask or a cloth around your nose if you are spritzing it on.

As an aside, I noticed CLR works particularly well on chrome fixtures, but with some work and patience it cuts even the hardest water deposits on porcelain. Four stars–not a miracle cure, but it eventually does the trick.

UPDATE: Instead of using a spray-on mister, try pouring CLR in a bowl and dipping a stiff brush in and scrubbing. Don’t rinse. Wait 15 minutes and repeat until things look the way you want. This works much better than using a spritzer.

Tried everything from shortening the chain, replacing the fill valve (twice) and testing the water pressure. Finally called Toto techs who recommended CLR. First, close the valve to the wall and flush. Empty the bowl as much as possible (doesn’t need to be totally empty). Use the ENTIRE GALLON: Pour 1/2 into the overflow tube (inside the tank). Pour the other 1/2 into the bowl. As instructed by Toto, let it sit for 24 hours. Calcium and mineral deposits came off in huge chunks. Flushed 24 hours later. Toto went from a frustrating 7-second flush to a 1-second power flush. Whooosh! CLR got rid of 99% of calcium/mineral deposits. Toto works good as new.

This a product that I think should be on every home owners shelf even if you don’t have hard water. It is best to use this as a regular cleaning agent for toilets since the flushing ports will almost invariably build up with deposits. Poor a cup full or two down the fill tube in the water tank a few time a year and let sit overnight and your likely to never have a problem. It also makes cleaning bathtubs and sinks when they start getting scale much easier. This is probably the best and safest product for cleaning of calcium, lime and rust on the market.
