Terribly out of date re: building code & materials, October 11, 2009

This book is a rehash of Black & Decker’s basic deck building book, and has some add’l fluff added to it that suffers the same fate, in that much of the info between the covers is no longer accurate concerning acceptible deck building methods, and it’s hopelessly out of date re: materials. If one were to construct a deck as outlined in this book it wouldn’t be conforming to the latest far more demanding building codes, esp those adopted about a yr ago. The Publisher should either cease publishing this book, or completely revise it. . .Absolutely a waste of money, in my opinion.

Just what it says – advanced, not basic, August 2, 1999

The book had good pictures and several good ideas on how to create an advanced deck. It is well written and easy to follow. This book includes multi-level, decks with angles or curves, low profile decks, etc.
However, they assume that you are an advanced deck builder and gloss over many of the basics. They do have a basic deck building book by the same company that they recommend, although I haven’t seen it anywhere.

This review is from: Programming and Customizing the PICAXE Microcontroller 2/E (Programmable Controllers Series) (Paperback)
As I see many in depth reviews I will keep mine short and sweet.

The book is well written and useful but the Revelation Education Picaxe manuals are more up to date and complete. I did read this book and it has a lot of good information in it but when I have a question I don’t reach for it, instead I hit the RevEd manual and forum.

Overall, it’s not a bad book but it’s hard to justify the cost given the quality of the free manual by RevEd.

If you are the hands on type and you want a good Picaxe book you should check out PICAXE Microcontroller Projects for the Evil Genius by Ron Hackett. It uses projects to walk you though Picaxe hardware and software and teaches you good programming and interfacing practices that you will use everyday.

So I found this micro and wanted to learn more about it. Went to my public library and checked out this book. It is full of projects from flashing a LED to driving LCD desplays. Lots of good info. So I started to think about getting a copy for myself.
So I look at Amazon thinking to pick it up. I was shocked! Shocked I say! To find the price for a new copy to start at $500.00!!!! No that is not a typo. The used copys start at over $90.00. The cover price is $35.00. Are they high? Funny thing is I did a web serch for the book and google returned a shopping find at Amazon for $26.00. When I clicked the link it went to the crazy priced page.
Now if you want a copy of this book it would pay you to look around.

I would like to point out that the crazy prices are from other sellers not Amazon directly.

    Thank you for looking.

This is probably a good stating place for those who have no electronic or programing experince. I have given this book only a 3 star because most of the material is very basic. One dispointment was the index subject and page number did not match several subjects that I use the index to find. I now use the picaxe web site, it has good examples and is current and up to date with the latest part numbers. I must add that with the web site you have to print out the manual, i.e the reason for buying the book. In electronic everything gets dated pretty fast, as of now there are several new picaxe devices that are not in the book. As with most techincal book it will be good for some, fair for other, and of little value for a few.
