I found one of these books in the Library “A Day in the City” and brought it home with in the day everyone of my children 20 years to 6 years had throughly scoured the book to find all the things that were recorded with in, It even entertained myself as I read it and searched the pictures with my youngest. I have since brought home “A Year on a Pirate Ship”, “A year on a Farm” and “A Year at a Construction sight.” I highly recommend this series of book for any family.

I gave this as a gift to a boy five-years-old. He took it everywhere with him for weeks! He even took it to bed with him! He loved looking for the characters that re-appear throughout the book and seeing the weather change as well. This is a great book for any little boy!

The book is listed for the ‘5 and up’ crowd, but I would recommend it more for the 4-8 year old with a particular interest in all things construction.

The pictures are packed with fascinating little details that are fun to look around and hunt for. For example, there is someone eating in every picture though there is one page that I haven’t found the guy/gal yet! The action covers the demolition-through-construction of a new school over the course of the year. Not all months are shown, but each one has a nice theme (ie placing the floors).

I would have found this perfect for my oldest when he was young…he was an avid fan of construction (I’m pretty sure that was his first word), but I bought it for my more ‘builder minded’ 10 year old. He was unimpressed. Really, this was only due to his age and I actually had fun going through it.

So, highly recommended for the happy construction/builder fans, but I would say for the 4-8 year olds with the younger ones looking at it with their parents.

This is a great book for start up and existing construction companies alike. It explains many aspects of the business and how things should be done to ensure profitability and longevity. It has helped my company tremendously.

Most people who start construction companies start out as construction workers who get an opportunity. They are often brilliant at building, but lack training in the business aspect of running a company. My husband and I started a construction firm, he has 15 years experience in construction and I have plenty of business experience. Even with all that we knew between us, there were still huge gray areas in our knowledge base. Because I am an avid reader, I ordered about 15 different books on starting up and running a construction business. Some are wonderful, some are garbage…

This book is helpful in that it really explains the business end of the construction industry. Though this won’t tell you how to build a house or a hotel… it will tell you the logistics of bidding, tracking expenses, labor costs, time sheets, draws, and all kinds of other things the those not familiar with the industry might have problems with the first go round. It helps you to figure out all of the little things that you might forget when trying to determine “if I do the job for X will I make any money?” The book is quite colorful and has excellent graphs, drawings and pictures to really bring to light what they are explaining to you.

If you are considering either starting a construction company, or trying to move up in one… I highly recommend this book.

This is a must read for anyone considering going into the construction business. As somebody who was in the business for almost 20 years, I wish this book was around when I first started. It covers all the bases and offers good advice on where to obtain the necessary items you’ll need to get up and going.
